If we could offer you one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. You can reduce the risk of getting melanoma and premature aging by protecting yourself when you are in the sun. This means more than just wearing sunscreen on hot summer days, in fact 80% of the sun’s rays can still reach you through light clouds, mist, and fog.
Sunblock will protect your skin but remember that it should be “broad-spectrum coverage” which will protect you from both UV-A and UV-B radiation. Sunblock with an SPF of 12 to 29 provide only moderate protection. Those with an SPF of 30 or higher is recommended for full protection.
Typical signs of sun damage include freckles, sunspots and wrinkles! It is very important to reapply sunblock every 2 hours if you are in the sun (which includes driving) for long periods of time.
How to Protect Yourself:
- Don’t forget your sensitive lips! Protect with a lip balm that has an SPF of 15 or
higher - Reapply (even waterproof sunblock) every 2 hours
- Wear sunglasses with UV-protective lenses. The label should say the lenses block
at least 99% of UV-A and UV-B radiation - Apply sunblock about 30 minutes before you go into the sun
- Limit the amount of time you spend in the sun between the hours of 10am and 4pm when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Check the local UV index before you head out.
- Check your medications! Some medications can make you more sun-sensitive, including oral contraceptives, antibiotics, skin treatments (Retin-A etc) and medications for blood pressure, and arthritis.
