According to a recent study from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), calf augmentation procedures have risen by 61% in the past year. Board-certified Baltimore plastic surgeon Dr. James Vogel says he expects popularity of the procedure to continue growing as new developments emerge in implementation of calf augmentation. At his Baltimore plastic surgery practice, Dr. James Vogel says calf augmentation is a procedure rapidly growing in popularity. The latest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) confirm Dr. Vogel’s observations, reporting that calf augmentation procedures have increased by 61% from 2009 to 2010. Dr. Vogel says he uses a reliable technique for calf augmentation which involves transfer of fat harvested from the patient’s abdomen or thighs into their calf muscle. He says the result is permanent and natural because the procedure utilizes the patient’s own fat. There is also minimal scarring because the injection is performed through a small incision. The associated liposuction procedure to obtain the fat also creates an enhanced appearance to compliment the improved calf size and shape.

Dr. Vogel says one of the major benefits of fat transfer calf augmentation is that there are very few risks associated with the procedure. While soreness and swelling will occur, he says recovery from the procedure is usually quick and patients can resume full activity with in a week. However, Dr. Vogel does suggest delaying strenuous physical activity for about six weeks after the surgery. He also adds that the body can reabsorb some of the fat injection, and in unusual cases more than one treatment may be required to achieve the desired result.

Plastic Surgeon in Maryland Discusses ASAPS Breast Augmentation Stats and Silicone Implants

The latest study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reveals more than 62% of the 318,123 breast augmentation procedures performed in 2010 used silicone breast implants. At his Baltimore plastic surgery practice, Dr. James Vogel says an even greater number of his patients prefer silicone to saline breast implants, estimating that nearly 85% of them choose the new cohesive silicone gel implants.

The most recent data from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) shows more than 9.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2010, with breast augmentation highlighted as the most popular form of surgical aesthetic enhancement. Of the 318,123 breast augmentation procedures performed, 62% of patients chose silicone breast implants, a preference Dr. James Vogel, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Baltimore, MD, attributes to the more natural look and feel of the newer generation of implants.

Dr. Vogel says his Baltimore breast augmentation patients prefer the new silicone implants, which are made of a cohesive silicone gel: “The main reason patients prefer the new silicone implants is because they are more natural in appearance and softer to the touch when compared to saline implants.” At his practice, Dr. Vogel says his patients prefer silicone roughly 85% of the time, which presents a greater patient propensity toward silicone than the national average presented by the ASAPS study.

About the Procedure

Calf augmentation is done to make the legs appear more shapely and defined. This can create a greater feeling of confidence, particularly in clothes, such as shorts and swimsuits. Calf augmentation can be done with implants or fat injection. With the fat transfer, fat is harvested from one site on the body (such as abdomen or thighs) and transferred to the calf muscle through a very small incision.

Recovery from Calf Augmentation

Immediately following the surgery the calves may feel stiff and sore. Some swelling and bruising is to be expected. Normal physical activities may be resumed a few days after the fat transfer surgery. Patients can resume full activity in 5 to 7 days after fat injections. However vigorous activities such as exercise should be delayed until about six weeks after the surgery.

Risks with Calf Augmentation

The risks of fat transfer/fat injection are few and minimal. Soreness and swelling are possible. The body can also reabsorb the fat injections, which is difficult to predict. With fat transfer, the average patient may need more than one treatment to get the desired result.
