MTF Transgender Hair Transplants & Feminization of the Hairline

Home/Hair Restoration & Transplant Surgery/MTF Transgender Hair Transplants & Feminization of the Hairline

Transitioning your appearance to match your gender identity is often a delicate and complex process. At our practice, plastic surgeon Carrie Houssock, MD, FACS takes pride in helping transwomen achieve their aesthetic goals through highly customized surgical procedures. One of the most important aesthetic components for any woman is often the appearance of her hair. Unfortunately, treatment with female hormones cannot reverse hair loss or revise the appearance of the hairline; however, with artfully-performed hair transplant surgery, thicker hair coverage and a more feminine hairline can be possible. Regardless of your ethnicity or hair type, if you are a good candidate for treatment, Dr. Houssock has the experience and technical skill to create beautiful, natural-looking results that suit your desired style and appearance.

We are committed to providing compassionate medical expertise to all, and we welcome transwomen to our practice. In addition to MTF hair transplants, we also offer MTF top surgery and other customized procedures for the face and body that are designed to help transwomen achieve a look that affirms their gender identity.

What Are MTF Transgender Hair Transplants?

Male-to-female (MTF) hair transplant surgery, also referred to as transgender hair restoration, is a procedure that utilizes state-of-the-art hair transplantation techniques to correct the appearance of thinning areas on the scalp and create a more youthful, feminine-looking hairline. Dr. Houssock has expertise in the aesthetic challenges transwomen face when it comes to their hair, as well as a deep understanding of the positive impact a natural-looking, feminine hairstyle can have on self-esteem and self-confidence. Our surgeon offers the full range of hair transplant techniques in order to deliver the highest-quality results for patients of all hair types and styles.

Who Is a Candidate for MTF Hair Transplants?

Generally speaking, hair transplants can be ideal for correcting “male pattern hair loss”, a common condition linked to male hormones. For transwomen who have completed gender reassignment surgery and/or are currently taking hormone therapy, male pattern hair loss typically ceases to progress, which can be beneficial for the longevity of any results achieved with hair transplants. Using hair restoration techniques that may include follicular unit extraction (FUE)/grafting and hairline lowering, our surgeon can potentially correct the appearance of:

  • Thinning areas of the scalp
  • Bald patches
  • Bald spots on the crown
  • Receding hairlines
  • Hairlines with a “masculine” shape
  • Excessively high hairlines

While MTF hair transplants can be very effective, it is important to understand that not all patients with hair loss are good candidates for the procedure. Dr. Houssock must first perform an examination of your scalp and discuss your medical history before determining whether you are well-suited for hair transplant surgery. If you are a transwoman at any stage of your transition, we encourage you to schedule a hair transplant consultation to discuss your hair loss concerns and hair restoration goals with our skilled surgeon. If you are a good candidate for any of our procedures, your surgeon will devise a highly individualized treatment plan that’s custom-tailored to suit your needs. Your surgical plan may even include techniques that can help conceal visible scarring for an optimal final outcome. Dr. Houssock also has expertise in performing corrective hair transplants for patients who are unsatisfied by the results they achieved from a different surgeon.

What Happens During the MTF Hair Transplant Procedure?

Since each hair restoration surgery is unique to the individual’s needs and goals, your procedure will vary based on the techniques used. Prior to the start of your procedure, your surgeon will fully educate you about the type of sedation you will require, the length of the procedure, the surgical process, and what to expect following surgery. Some patients may require a series of transplant procedures or a phased approach to achieve the fullest, most natural-looking results. During your hair restoration surgery you can trust that Dr. Houssock will draw upon her surgical expertise and refined aesthetic sensibilities to create results that most closely mimic natural hair coverage. The focus will also be on creating a hairline that is typically lower, flatter, and rounder for a more feminine look.

What Is the Recovery Process Like After MTF Hair Transplants?

You should expect a certain degree of redness, swelling, and soreness both in the harvesting and grafting sites after your procedure; however, medication can help provide you with adequate relief from discomfort. If your procedure included larger incisions, as is the case with the strip harvesting method or hairline lowering, your healing process may take a bit longer. The majority of patients are able to return to work after a few days, but your progress may differ. During your follow-up appointments, your surgeon can keep you apprised of your progress and let you know when you reach important milestones in both your healing and hair growth. Your comfort, safety, and success are very important to us and our entire team is dedicated to supporting you at every stage of the process.

What Results Can I Expect After MTF Hair Transplants?

The full results of your hair transplant procedure will not be immediately apparent, and you must practice some patience as the follicles go through their natural growth cycle. After about three months (when the follicles have ended their resting stage) your new hair growth should begin. It can take about five months for the hair growth to mature to a point where it can be assessed. Then, after about one year, the full results of your procedure should be visible. At this time, Dr. Houssock can determine whether additional transplant procedures are indicated to achieve your aesthetic goals. For some patients, PRP and ACell® injection therapy can help support maximum hair growth and boost the quality of results. If you are a good candidate for PRP and ACell injections, your surgeon will discuss this state-of-the-art therapy during your consultation. You may choose to undergo additional treatment to conceal any visible scarring resulting from your initial procedure.

When discussing the results of MTF hair transplants, a picture is often worth a thousand words. For this reason, we encourage you to ask your surgeon to show you before-and-after photos of patients they’ve treated who have similar hair loss challenges and hair restoration goals. With photos to explore, you can truly see what is possible with the help of our experienced surgeon!
