Neck contours can be improved with a variety of techniques. This is illustrated by the different approaches seen on the web site photos below. The technique that will give you the best result depends on several factors. These include your age, amount of fat in the neck, degree of excess skin, and quality of skin tone. Other relevant features of facial aging, such as prominent jowls and wrinkling of the skin, are also considered when formulating the best plan for you. Sometimes, neck contouring is combined with facelift to achieve more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

Am I a Good Candidate for Neck Contouring?

As we age, the muscles that span from the jaw to the neck can weaken, fat deposits can gather below the chin, and the skin can begin to sag. The jaw can lose definition, deep creases may develop, and some people remark that they’ve developed the appearance of a “turkey neck.” Factors including weight fluctuations, sun exposure, and/or smoking can further amplify these visible effects of aging. If you have skin laxity at jawline or neck, thick bands of muscle, or excess skin and fat that causes sagging, neck contouring can rejuvenate the area for a more youthful appearance.

Ideal neck contouring patients will be in good overall health, avoid smoking, and maintain realistic expectations. During the consultation process, Dr. Carrie A. Houssock will perform a physical exam, review your medical history, and discuss your personal cosmetic goals to determine your candidacy.

Neck Contouring Techniques

For some patients, removing excess fat from the neck and tightening the underlying musculature can minimize the appearance of “neck bands” without the need to remove any skin. Liposuction is typically used with this neck contouring technique. After the procedure is complete, the skin can simply take on the new shape of the neck.

Other patients may require the removal of excess skin and tightening of the neck musculature, which entails an incision that can be hidden behind the ears. This more traditional procedure can offer a more comprehensive degree of rejuvenation with longer lasting results.
