Permanent Hair Reduction with IPL® (Intense Pulsed Light) – A Long-lasting Solution for Unwanted Hair

For long-lasting hair removal, IPL® (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments are increasingly popular and effective. The most popular areas for hair removal include the face, armpits, bikini area, legs, and back. Studies have shown that 40 to 80 percent of hair can be removed for months or years with multiple treatments. Patients with darker hair and fairer skin tend to have the best results, but patients with many skin and hair types can be successfully treated.

The IPL® works by using heat to damage the hair follicles and inhibit growth. During the procedure, an experienced staff member will carefully move a hand-held device over the skin in the area where you wish to remove hair. We can apply a topical anesthetic and a cooling gel to your skin for your comfort. This skin care procedure requires only a few minutes for small areas, such as the area above your lip, or up to an hour for larger areas such as your back. You may feel a mild stinging sensation as the light treatments are administered. While an assistant performs the procedure, our plastic surgeon—James Vogel, MD—provides medical supervision to ensure a safe skin care experience. Most of our patients will need several laser skin care treatments for maximum results.

You should avoid sun exposure for at least four weeks prior to the procedure and for several weeks following the procedure. We recommend that you shave the area to be treated several days before, and that you avoid electrolysis, waxing or plucking of hair in the area several weeks beforehand.

Side effects are usually temporary and very mild. Following the procedure, you may experience some continued stinging, redness, or swelling. Occasionally, patients may experience some temporary darkening or lightening of skin color, but complications are rare.
